The Abukuma River is a 239-km long first-class river that originates in Asahidake, Nishigo-Village, Nishi-Shirakawa-Gun, Fukushima Prefecture, flows northward through the Nakadori region of Fukushima Prefecture, enters Miyagi Prefecture, and flows into the Pacific Ocean. The river has a basin area of 5,400 km² and spans the three prefectures of Fukushima, Miyagi, and Yamagata. The river flows between the steep Ou Mountains and the gentle Abukuma Mountains, and its watershed is covered with agricultural and urban areas as it winds through basins such as Koriyama and Motomiya.
