Ouchi-juku is located in a mountain area at an elevation of about 600 meters. Snow usually begins to accumulate from late November, and from December through February the thatched roofs and street are often covered in a white winter landscape. The snowy post town is popular as winter Ouchi-juku, and many visitors come during the Ouchi-juku Snow Festival, which is held every year on the second Saturday and Sunday of February.

Ouchi-juku is an Edo-period post town in Shimogo Town, Minamiaizu District, Fukushima Prefecture. It flourished as a lodging town along the Aizu Nishi Kaido, also called the Shimotsuke Kaido, an important route connecting Aizuwakamatsu with Nikko Imaichi. Today, thatched-roof houses still line the street for about 450 meters, preserving the appearance of the Edo period.
In 1981, Ouchi-juku was selected as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Under the local principles of not selling, not renting, and not destroying, residents have continued to protect the townscape. Along the street, soba restaurants, souvenir shops, and inns welcome visitors, and the local specialty negi soba, also called Takato soba, is famous for its unique style of using a leek as chopsticks.
