Ondonoseto is a narrow strait about 90 to 100 meters wide between Ondo-cho, Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture and Kegoya-cho on the opposite shore, and is an important waterway connecting Hiroshima Bay and the Akinada Sea. The tides are fast and it has been known as a difficult place for ships since ancient times. The most famous legend is that it was excavated by Taira no Kiyomori in 1165, for the purpose of pilgrimage to Itsukushima Shrine and for the purpose of establishing a route for Japan-Song trade. There is also a “sun-beckoning legend” in which Kiyomori beckoned back the setting sun with a fan. Currently, the Ondo Bridge and the Second Ondo Bridge span the area, making it a popular tourist destination.
