Nihohime Shrine is located in Nishihonuracho, Minami Ward, Hiroshima City. The main deity is Nihotsuhime-no-kami, and it is said that Empress Jingu founded the shrine after receiving divine powers here on her way back from the conquest of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. The shrine enshrines an arrow as its divine object, and in 885, Usa Hachiman-gu Shrine was also enshrined here. The main shrine building survived the atomic bombing and was used as a relief center for victims. It was destroyed by fire in 2007, but rebuilt in 2010. The annual “misogi-harai” lion dance is an important traditional event in the area. Nihohime Shrine enshrines Nihotsuhime-no-kami is also popular as a shrine for safe childbirth and child-rearing.
