Kotokuji Temple is said to have been founded in the Hakuho period (672-). The temple grounds include the Sesshu Garden, which is said to have been created by Sesshu.
You can also see the autumn leaves of about 4,000 hydrangeas, 700 varieties of camellias, 80 varieties of cherry blossoms, hibiscus, and 1,200 Enkianthus campanulatus. The hydrangeas are particularly famous, and Kotokuji Temple is also known as the Hydrangea Temple. Hydrangeas were started to be planted by the 23rd head priest around 1892, and it is said that there are currently more than 4,000 hydrangeas.
