Lake Saroma is located in the northeastern part of Hokkaido and is the third largest brackish lake in Japan and the largest in Hokkaido. It is connected to the Sea of Okhotsk by two artificial lake mouths, and scallop and oyster farming is popular. It is also designated as Abashiri Quasi-National Park, and its rich nature is attractive.
The Lake Saroma Mouth Lighthouse, which stands at the mouth of the lake, is a 13m tall lighthouse with a red stripe on a white background that was first lit in 1966. It watches over the safety of ships passing between the Sea of Okhotsk and Lake Saroma, and is also popular as a scenic spot that can be accessed on foot from Ryugudai Campsite. You can also enjoy bird watching in the surrounding area.
