Tomakomai Port is an international hub port located in southwestern Hokkaido on the Pacific coast, close to Sapporo City and New Chitose Airport, and is a transportation hub. It opened in 1963 as the world’s first inland excavated port and consists of the West Port District and the East Port District. It handles about half of Hokkaido’s marine cargo and boasts one of the largest cargo handling volumes in the country. Many car ferries, RORO ships, and container ships are in service, and it plays an important role as a base for industry, distribution, and energy.
