Lake Toyako is a nearly circular caldera lake located in the southwest of Hokkaido, and is the ninth largest lake in Japan. The surrounding area is designated as Shikotsu-Toya National Park, and is characterized by its landscape formed by volcanic activity such as Mount Usu and Showa Shinzan. Four islands float in the center, and can be visited by sightseeing boats.
Toyako Onsen is a hot spring resort that springs up on the southern shore of Lake Toya. It was discovered by the eruption of Mount Usu in the Meiji era, and is popular with many tourists due to its abundant hot water and beautiful views. Hotels and inns line the lakeside, and the open-air baths offer a panoramic view of Lake Toya, beautiful in every season. The hot spring town also has foot baths, promenades, and a sculpture park, so you can enjoy a stroll.
