Mount Hakodate is a 334m high mountain located on the western edge of the city of Hakodate, Hokkaido, and is also a land-tied island. Also known as “Gagyusan,” the mountain is a treasure trove of nature, with about 600 species of plants and about 150 species of wild birds living on its 9.5km circumference. From the summit, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the city of Hakodate, Tsugaru Strait, and Shimokita Peninsula, and the night view is especially famous.
The Mount Hakodate Ropeway is a transportation system that connects the foot of the mountain to the summit, which opened on November 15, 1958. It was originally a 31-seater, but was updated to a large 125-seater ropeway in 1988. A new gondola was introduced in 2014, and is still used by many tourists today.
Mount Hakodate can be accessed by ropeway, tourist bus, local bus, taxi, or private car, but traffic restrictions are in place at night and in winter. The summit has an observation deck, shops, and restaurants, making it a central tourist spot in Hakodate. The mountain also has a historical aspect, with the remains of a gun battery, a former military fortress, remaining on the mountain.
