Kikaijima is an uplifted coral reef island located about 380km south of Kagoshima Prefecture and 25km east of Amami Oshima. It has a circumference of about 48.6km and a rare geology that continues to rise at about 2mm per year. Its main industries are sugarcane cultivation and white sesame production, of which it boasts the largest production volume in Japan. The island has a subtropical climate and is safe as it is free of snakes, and is known as a place where migratory chestnut butterflies fly in. It is also rich in nature and is a popular tourist destination.
