Kuroshima is the largest island in Mishima Village, with an area of about 15.3 km² and a circumference of about 20.1 km, and there are two settlements, Osato in the east and Katadomari in the west. It is characterized by 500m-class mountains, including the highest peak, Yagura-dake (622m), a coastline with cliffs, and countless waterfalls. The entire island is covered with Daimyo bamboo and evergreen broad-leaved forests, and has been designated as a national natural monument, the “Satsuma Kuroshima Forest Plant Community.” Shiitake mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and cattle grazing are thriving, and the island’s rich nature and unique scenery are its attractions.
