Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is a shrine in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto City, founded in 947, and is the head shrine of about 12,000 Tenmangu Shrines and Tenjin Shrines nationwide. The main deity is Sugawara no Michizane, known as the god of learning.
The current main hall was built by order of Toyotomi Hideyori in 1607 and is designated as a national treasure. This building has a beautiful architectural style from the Momoyama period and is considered to be the prototype of Gongen-zukuri (a style of building that uses deities to create a shrine).
