Kyoto’s “Philosopher’s Path” is a 1.5 km walk along the Lake Biwa Canal from Kumano Wakaoji Shrine to Ginkakuji Temple. It came to be called “Philosopher’s Path” because philosophers Kitaro Nishida and Hajime Tanabe strolled along it and lost themselves in thought. It is one of the “100 Best Roads in Japan,” and the walkway is currently well maintained. Along the walkway, you can enjoy the scenery of the seasons, including fresh greenery, cherry blossoms, and autumn leaves.

The best time to see the autumn leaves is usually from mid- to late November. Many trees planted along the canal turn red and yellow, creating a beautiful landscape together with the autumn leaves reflected on the water. There are many famous autumn foliage viewing spots in the area, such as Eikando Temple and Nanzenji Temple, so you can enjoy viewing the autumn leaves while strolling around.
