Sasebo Port is located in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture, and is one of the largest natural harbors in Japan, known as “hako”, with a narrow mouth and a wide bay. Since the establishment of the Navy Naval Base in 1889, it has developed as a military port, and is still home to bases for the U.S. Navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. It also plays an important role as a shipbuilding, heavy industry and logistics base, and in recent years it has been developed as a place for cruise ships to call at and a place for citizens to relax.
