Makinoto, located in Kokonoe-machi, Oita Prefecture, is one of the main trailheads to Mount Kuju, the highest peak in the Kyushu mainland. It is located at an altitude of 1,330m along the Yamanami Highway that continues from Chojabaru. There are parking lots, shops, and toilets here, and it is crowded with many climbers during the climbing season. The hiking trail to the easy-to-climb Mount Kutsukake is also popular, making it a base for enjoying the magnificent nature.
