About Shiga Prefecture
Shiga Prefecture is a landlocked prefecture located in the Kinki region, with a population of approximately 1.4 million and an area of approximately 4,017 square kilometers. Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest lake, covers about one-sixth of the prefecture’s area and has long played a vital role as a water source for Japan, earning it the nickname “Treasure House of Water.” The prefectural capital is Otsu City, and major cities include Hikone, Nagahama, Kusatsu, and Omihachiman.
Notable tourist destinations include the World Heritage Site Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei, the National Treasure Hikone Castle, the waterways of Omihachiman, and Koka City, the center of Shigaraki ware production, all of which are known nationwide. On Mount Ibuki (elevation 1,377 meters), winter snowfall can be monitored via live cameras. Many rivers, such as the Ane, Yasu, and Aichi Rivers, flow into Lake Biwa, and live cameras are also used to monitor water levels during floods.
