Nikko Futarasan Shrine Chugushi is located on the shore of Lake Chuzenji in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, and is enshrined on the middle slope of Mt. Nantai. It was founded by Shodo Shonin in 784 and is called “Chugushi” because it is located halfway between the main shrine and the inner shrine. The main hall, worship hall, and middle gate, which were rebuilt in 1701, are designated as important cultural properties of Japan. It is known as the front entrance to Mt. Nantai, and a climbing festival is held from July 31st to August 8th. It has a history of syncretism between Shinto and Buddhism, and even today it plays an important role as a center of mountain worship.
