Aogashima is one of the southernmost inhabited volcanic islands in the Izu Islands, 358 km from Tokyo and 70 km from Hachijojima. The island is characterized by a double caldera, with an outer rim and an inner rim in the center. A caldera is a large depression created by volcanic activity, and means “kettle” or “pot” in Spanish.
Aogashima is the village with the smallest population in Japan, with a population of about 170 people (2019). There are no direct flights from the mainland, so you can get there by boat or helicopter from Hachijojima. However, boat flights are often canceled due to bad weather, and helicopters have a limited capacity, so access is not easy in either case.
