Kanda Myojin is a historic shrine founded in 730 in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo. During the Edo period, it was revered as the main guardian deity of Edo, and is still loved by many people today.
It enshrines three gods, Okuninushi, Sukunahikona, and Taira no Masakado, and is said to bring good fortune in matchmaking, marital harmony, health prayers, business prosperity, and victory.
The vermilion main hall, built in 1934, is a symbolic structure that survived the Great Kanto Earthquake and the Tokyo Air Raids, and is designated as a national tangible cultural property.
The Kanda Festival, held every May, is famous as one of the three major festivals of Edo. It is also a historic shrine where Tokugawa Ieyasu prayed for victory before the Battle of Sekigahara, and in 1616 it was moved to a location guarding the front demon gate of Edo Castle.
