Hahajima in Ogasawara Village, Tokyo, is one of the Ogasawara Islands located about 50 km south of Chichijima. It is long and narrow from north to south, with an area of about 20 square kilometers. It is a World Heritage Site also known as the “Galapagos of the Orient,” with untouched subtropical forests and rare plants and animals, such as the endemic Japanese lanternfly. The only settlement is Okimura, and it is connected to Chichijima by the regular ferry “Hahajima Maru.” Ecotourism that makes use of the rich natural environment is thriving, and it is loved as the “Mother Island” where time flows quietly and peacefully.
