Winter Traffic Restrictions and Precautions
Winter traffic restrictions are usually in effect from around mid-December to late March of the following year. On the Koya-Ryujin Skyline, these restrictions are generally implemented from around December 15 to around March 25.
Restriction details
All vehicles: during daytime hours, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., winter tires such as studless tires are required and tire chains must be carried.
All vehicles: nighttime hours, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. the next morning, are fully closed to traffic.
Motorcycles: closed all day throughout the restriction period.
Because this is a mountain road at elevations over 1,000 meters, the road surface may freeze even when there is no visible snow. The live camera shows a fixed point near Gomasan Sky Tower, so please use it as a guide rather than a complete view of the entire route. The latest road restriction information can also be checked on the Wakayama Prefecture road information website.
Seasonal Highlights: Fresh Greenery, Autumn Leaves, and Snowy Scenery
The Koya-Ryujin Skyline is a scenic route that shows a different character in every season.
Spring, from April to May: fresh greenery covers the mountainsides. Just after the winter restrictions are lifted, you may also enjoy scenery where new green leaves appear together with remaining snow.
Summer, from June to August: because of the high elevation, it is around 10 degrees Celsius cooler than the lowlands, making the route ideal for a cool summer drive.
Autumn, from September to November: broadleaf trees such as beech and oak turn color, and the roadside becomes covered in autumn foliage. The best viewing period is usually from mid to late October.
Winter, from December to March: the area around Gomadanzan is wrapped in snow. Be sure to prepare for cold weather and check traffic restrictions carefully before driving.
Gomasan Sky Tower is an observation facility near the summit of Gomadanzan, at 1,372 meters. On clear days, it offers a 360-degree panoramic view.
