Ginzan Onsen is a historic hot spring resort in Obanazawa City, Yamagata Prefecture. It was discovered by former silver mine miners, and wooden multi-story inns from the Taisho to the early Showa eras form a distinctive landscape. It is also known as the setting for NHK’s “Oshin”, and is located deep in the mountains, where you can enjoy beautiful scenery in all four seasons. It is famous as a summer resort and a place of heavy snowfall in winter, and is popular as a secret hot spring with an atmosphere of Taisho romanticism.
It is also said that Ginzan Onsen is one of the models for the “Aburaya” hot spring that appears in the Studio Ghibli film “Spirited Away.” The Notoya Ryokan building, the atmosphere of the hot spring town, and the red bridge all overlap with the worldview of the film, making it a popular spot visited by many Ghibli fans.
