The Owarabi Rice Terraces are a scenic spot in Yamabe Town, Yamagata Prefecture. Of the 16 hectares of rice terraces, 3.4 hectares were selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Rice Terraces in 1999. Approximately 90 rice terraces spread across an altitude of 350-410m, and the rice is sun-dried using a distinctive “stake-hanging” method. Conservation activities are carried out by local farmers and volunteers. Events such as rice planting and harvesting are also held, and the traditional farming methods and beautiful scenery are highly regarded.
