Hirosaki Castle is a precious castle keep that still exists in the Tohoku region, built in the Edo period as the residence of the Tsugaru clan. The current keep is a reconstructed one, and although it is small, it has a stately presence.

Hirosaki Park is a vast park developed on the site of Hirosaki Castle, and is loved by locals as a place of relaxation. In spring, about 2,600 cherry trees bloom, making it one of Japan’s leading cherry blossom viewing spots. You can also enjoy the natural beauty of the four seasons, with autumn leaves in autumn and snowy scenery in winter. In addition to the castle gate and turrets that are important cultural properties, the park also has a museum and botanical garden, making it a spot where you can enjoy history and nature.

The Hirosaki Sakura Festival is held every year when the cherry blossoms bloom. Hirosaki Park is home to approximately 2,600 cherry trees of 52 varieties, including Somei-Yoshino, weeping, and double-flowered cherry trees. The best viewing period is usually from late April to early May. The trees are also lit up at night during the festival.

The phenomenon of the cherry trees in Hirosaki Park burying themselves in the moat is called “hanaikada” and is a spring feature of the park. The phenomenon of the cherry blossoms in Hirosaki Park falling after full bloom and floating on the surface of the moat, looking like a pink carpet, is called “hanaikada”. The best time to see the hanaikada is a few days after the Somei-Yoshino cherry trees are in full bloom, when they start to fall. The appearance changes depending on the wind conditions, so you can enjoy the different conditions at any given time.
