Kumamoto City is the prefectural capital of Kumamoto Prefecture. The prefectural population is approximately 1.8 million people, and the population of Kumamoto City is about 730,000 people. Kumamoto had been referred to as “Kumamoto” in the past, and it is said that Kiyomasa Kato, who was the Sengoku Daimyo of Kumamoto Prefecture, renamed “Kumamoto”, which is the origin of the current name, “Kumamoto.”
Kumamoto is the nation’s leading producer of agriculture flourishes, such as tomatoes, watermelon, eggplant, melon, etc. Facing the Ariake Sea, Kumamoto is the place where the aqua culture of pearl, prawn and seaweed is thriving. There are local dishes such as “Ikinaridago,” “Karashi Renkon,” “Basashi,” “Taipien,” etc.
There are tourist destinations such as “Kumamoto-jo Castle”, “Reigando (cave),” “Aso Nakadake Crater,” “Kurokawa Onsen”, “Amakusa Itsutsubashi” , and “Kikuchi Keikoku (Valley).”
Kumamoto Castle has a history of over 400 years since Kiyomasa Kato built the castle in 1601. The castle at the time was destroyed and disappeared in Boshin War of 1877, but it has led to the present through the work of reconstruction in 1960.
“Reigando” is the cave behind the temple “Ungan Zen-ji” in Kumamoto City, and is famous for the place where Musashi Miyamoto wrote “Gorin no sho,” an art of war manual. It is said that his last years living in Kumamoto,Miyamoto Musashi, the swordsman who traveled to countries for swordsmanship training, completed the “Gorin no sho” that was written over five years in the “Reigando.” The Treasure Museum in Ungan Zen-ji exhibits a portrait of Musashi Miyamoto and the wooden sword that is said to be used in the duel of Ganryujima, and it became a tourist attraction as a place related to Musashi.
“Aso-zan(Mt. Aso)” officially refers to the five mountains, Taka-dake, Naka-dake, Nego-dake, Eboshi-dake and Kijima-dake, but generally refers to Nakadake(1,506m), which is still active. In Nakadake, you cannot only ride in a ropeway but also pass through Aso-zan Park Road by car to go to near the crater. The size of the crater is 1km from east to west, 400m from north to south and the perimeter is 4km. It is world-rare that you can go up so close to the crater of the active volcano, “Aso-zan,” and it is visited by many tourists at home and abroad.
In addition, Aso City has many hot springs because there is an active volcano, and 40% of the number of source of Onsen (Hot Springs) in Kumamoto Prefecture concentrates in the city. There are many hot springs that flow multiplied by the rich source in the spa town of the city, and you can feel free to drop in place as well as hotel guests.
