Jigokudani Monkey Park is a monkey park located in Jigokudani Onsen in the valley of Yokoyu River in northern Nagano Prefecture. It is famous both domestically and internationally as a park where you can see wild Japanese macaques bathing in hot springs. It is located in a harsh environment at an altitude of 850m and opened in 1964. It is world famous as “snow monkeys” because you can observe Japanese macaques bathing in hot springs up close. About 160 monkeys live here, and you can observe them in a natural environment without fences or cages. In winter, the area can snow more than 1m and temperatures can drop below -10°C, but the monkeys warm themselves in the hot springs. You can observe the monkeys’ behavior and child-rearing throughout the year, making it a popular spot for researchers and photographers.
