Zenkoji is a non-sectarian Buddhist temple that enshrines the Ikko Sanzon Amida Nyorai, said to be Japan’s oldest hidden Buddhist image. It is said to have been founded in 644 and has a history of about 1,400 years. The Main Hall is designated a National Treasure, and the Sanmon Gate is an Important Cultural Property. As a temple open to visitors regardless of Buddhist sect, it receives many worshippers from Japan and abroad throughout the year. As the saying goes, “Even from far away, visit Zenkoji at least once,” it is widely loved as a sacred place people hope to visit once in their lifetime.

What You Can See on the Zenkoji Temple Live Camera and Camera Locations
Zenkoji Temple has two live cameras installed on the Sanmon Gate. The first camera faces the area in front of the Main Hall, showing worshipper crowding and the atmosphere of the temple grounds in real time. The second camera faces the Nakamise shopping street, showing the activity along the approach. The two views are streamed while automatically switching at regular intervals of about 12 seconds.
The video is provided as a YouTube live stream and can be viewed at any time from a smartphone, computer, or tablet. Please note that the live stream is mainly offered during major events such as the year-end and New Year period, Gokaicho, and the Nagano Tomyo Festival; at ordinary times, the camera may instead be available as still images updated every five minutes. Check New Year Crowd Conditions at Zenkoji Temple by Live Camera
Zenkoji is known as one of Nagano Prefecture’s leading New Year visit destinations, and many worshippers visit during the first three days of January every year. The two-year visit from around 11:00 p.m. on December 31 to about 3:00 a.m. on New Year’s Day is expected to be especially crowded, so checking the temple grounds on the live camera before visiting is recommended.
The year-end and New Year live camera stream usually starts around December 28 and continues until around mid-January. The streaming period changes each year, so please check the latest information on the official Zenkoji website or the INC Nagano Cable Television website. To avoid crowds, visiting on a weekday early morning after the first three days of the year, around the time of the o-asaji morning service, is generally less crowded.

Every morning at Zenkoji, a Buddhist service called o-asaji is held. One experience unique to Zenkoji is ojuzu chodai, in which visitors receive merit when the priest touches them with prayer beads while walking along the approach. Many people enjoy watching this scene each morning through the live camera.
During the Zenkoji Gokaicho, held once every seven years, the Maedachi Honzon is displayed and the temple grounds become the busiest of the year. The Gokaicho live camera stream also lets you check the Eko-bashira pillar and the areas around Daikanjin and Daihongan from home. During the Nagano Tomyo Festival, held every February, the Zenkoji precincts are illuminated, and the fantastic scenery is streamed live.

A temple often visited together with Zenkoji is Kitamuki Kannon in Bessho Onsen, Ueda City. The practice of visiting both temples, known as ryo-mairi, has long been rooted in Shinshu worship culture: Zenkoji is associated with blessings for rebirth in the future, while Kitamuki Kannon is associated with blessings in this present life. Visiting only one of the two is sometimes called kata-mairi, or an incomplete visit. Kitamuki Kannon also has a live camera that streams the goma prayer ceremony in real time.
