About Kokonoe Town
Kokonoe-machi is a town located in the western part of Oita Prefecture, Kushu District. With a population of approximately 8,000 and an area of 271 square kilometers, most of its area lies in high-altitude plateau regions. It spreads north of the Kuju mountain range (Kokonoe mountain range), which is included in Aso-Kuju National Park. The Tagahara and Tadera Wetlands (Ramsar Convention listed wetlands) and Makino-do Pass (elevation 1,330m) are representative entry points for hiking in the Kuju mountains. For tourism, Kokonoe Town is known for the Kokone Yume Ohashi suspension bridge, one of Japan’s largest pedestrian bridges with a length of 390m and a height of 173m, autumn foliage viewing spots such as Kusui Kei, Iida Plateau, and the Kokono Forest Park ski resort. Additionally, it features various distinctive hot spring areas like Suginu Onsen, Hōsenji Onsen, and Kabe-yu Onsen. The Kushu River (a tributary of the Oita River system/Chikugo River system), the Machida River, and the Nogami River flow through the town. During rainy season or typhoon season, their water levels tend to rise, making Kokonoe Town’s live cameras widely used not only for mountain climbing and sightseeing but also for checking river disaster prevention status.
