What you can check with the Shirakawa-go live camera

Shirakawa-go has multiple live cameras installed, allowing you to check the state of the village, road congestion, and parking availability from different cameras.

The Ogimachi Castle Ruins Observation Deck camera is the main camera operated by the Shirakawa Village Office, offering a panoramic view of the Ogimachi Gassho-zukuri village from a hilltop. It operates from 5 AM to 7 PM, with images updated every minute, making it ideal for real-time monitoring of current weather and snow conditions. Its charm lies in the dramatic changes in scenery depending on the time of day and season, from early mornings shrouded in mist to clear winter days when the snow-covered Gassho-zukuri roofs gleam.

The Toyota Shirakawa-go Nature School camera is located in the northern part of the village, in the Magari area. It captures the Gassho-zukuri buildings and the mountain range towards the Hakusan Shirakawa-go White Road, and is useful for checking the amount of snowfall. The Toyota Shirakawa-go Nature School website also publishes the daily snowfall amount (as of 9 AM), so it’s recommended to check this before visiting in winter.

For National Route 156 and road traffic cameras, you can check real-time footage of Ogimachi Intersection, Hatogaya Intersection, Seseragi Park Parking Lot, and Midashima Park Parking Lot on the Shirakawa-Going Travel Guide. During peak times, traffic jams can extend all the way to the Shirakawa-Go Interchange exit, so if you are traveling by car, it is recommended to check road conditions before you depart.

Seasonal Highlights and Live Camera Usage Guide

Shirakawa-go shows a different face in each of the four seasons. Checking the local conditions via live camera before your visit will help you plan a more fulfilling trip.

Winter (December to March): Snowscapes and illuminations

Shirakawa-go is one of Japan’s leading heavy snowfall areas, with snow typically beginning to fall in late December and sometimes accumulating to over 2 meters. Daytime temperatures in winter average around -1 to 0 degrees Celsius, so please be sure to take thorough precautions against the cold. For those traveling by car, snow tires are mandatory from early December to late March.

The biggest attraction in winter is the nighttime illumination event held on specific weekends in January and February. The lights from the gassho-zukuri houses illuminate the snow, creating a fantastical, fairytale-like world. The illumination is strictly by reservation and ticket system; entry and parking are not permitted without a reservation. Reservations fill up very quickly each year, so be sure to check the Shirakawa-go Tourism Association website for dates and reservation methods in advance.

Spring (April-May): Lingering Snow, Fresh Greenery, and Golden Week Crowds

In April, as the snow melts, a tranquil landscape unfolds, a mix of lingering snow and newly sprouted greenery. During Golden Week, many tourists from both Japan and abroad gather, and it’s not uncommon for the village-run parking lot to be full shortly after opening. We recommend checking road and parking conditions via live cameras before departure and planning your schedule to arrive before 10:00 AM.

Summer (June-September): Inverted Gassho-zukuri Houses and Cool Highland Climate

Shirakawa-go, located at a high altitude, enjoys relatively cool temperatures even in summer, making it a popular summer resort. A unique pleasure of this season is photographing the “inverted Gassho-zukuri houses.” During the period when the rice paddies are filled with water, you can enjoy the spectacular view of the Gassho-zukuri houses and surrounding mountains reflected on the water’s surface from the Ogimachi Castle Ruins Observation Deck and other points within the village. Checking the live camera footage on a clear morning before you go will increase your chances of seeing a beautiful inverted reflection.

Autumn (October-November): The Season for Spectacular Autumn Foliage

The autumn foliage in Shirakawa-go is typically at its best from late October to early November, and the sight of the mountains surrounding the Gassho-zukuri village dyed in red and yellow is breathtaking. From the Ogimachi Castle Ruins Observatory, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire village and the colorful mountains, making this the most popular photo spot of the year. The autumn foliage season is also one of the busiest times of the year, along with Golden Week, so be sure to check the crowd situation on the live camera and try to arrive early in the morning.

Check before you visit! Parking, access, and congestion information

The nearest access point to Shirakawa-go is the Shirakawa-go Interchange on the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway. While it usually takes about 10 minutes from the interchange to the village-run Seseragi Park parking lot, during Golden Week, the autumn foliage season, and illumination events, traffic congestion can extend all the way to the interchange exit, sometimes taking over two hours to reach the parking lot.

If you are coming from the Nagoya area, it is recommended to exit at the Shokawa Interchange (one exit before Shirakawa-go) and head north on National Route 156 to avoid congestion. The peak of congestion is around noon, so arriving before 10 AM is key to a comfortable visit.

Access to Parking and Observation Deck

Village-run Seseragi Park Parking Lot: 2,000 yen for regular cars, operating hours 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (last entry 4:30 PM)

During peak hours, staff will direct vehicles to the Midashima Park Parking Lot or the Terao Temporary Parking Lot.

The Ogimachi Castle Ruins Observation Deck is approximately a 15-minute walk from within the village, or accessible by shuttle bus (300 yen one way).

New System from December 2026: Tour Bus Advance Reservation System

From December 1, 2026, the acceptance of tour buses (large, medium, and minibuses) at the Village-run Seseragi Park Oro Parking Lot will change to an advance reservation system. Those planning a bus tour are advised to check the reservation start date (June 1, 2026) and make arrangements early.

For checking congestion forecasts, the Shirakawa Village-operated Shirakawa-go Smooth Travel Guide “SHIRAKAWA-Going” is convenient. A congestion forecast calendar for up to three months in advance, based on past parking data, is available, which can be helpful in selecting your visit date.

About Shirakawa-go’s Gassho-zukuri Houses and the World Heritage Site

Shirakawa-go is a settlement located in the Shogawa River basin in Shirakawa Village, Ono District, Gifu Prefecture. It was designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 1976, and in 1995, along with Gokayama in Toyama Prefecture, it was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site as “Shirakawa-go and Gokayama Gassho-zukuri Villages.” The Ogimachi settlement is the largest of the three settlements registered as World Heritage Sites (Ogimachi, Ainokura, and Suganuma), with approximately 100 Gassho-zukuri houses existing on an area of 45.6 hectares.

The most distinctive feature of Gassho-zukuri houses is their steeply sloping thatched roofs. The triangular shape, resembling clasped hands, originated from the wisdom of ancestors to facilitate snow removal in heavy snowfall areas. Houses designated as Important Cultural Properties, such as the Wada, Kanda, and Nagase residences, are open for interior tours, allowing visitors to experience the daily life and sericulture practices of the past.

An essential element in understanding life in Shirakawa-go is the spirit of “yui.” In the harsh natural conditions of winter, when the village is isolated by snow, it has developed a culture of mutual assistance where households have helped each other to sustain their lives. The custom of the entire village working together to re-thatch the thatched roofs of the gassho-zukuri houses continues to this day. Shirakawa-go’s greatest charm lies in the fact that it is not a theme park or a restored facility, but a “living World Heritage Site” where people still live today.
