Jododaira is a scenic spot located at the midpoint of the Bandai Azuma Skyline, at an altitude of about 1,600m. Surrounded by Mt. Issaikyo, Azuma Kofuji, Okenuma, and other mountains, the area is attractive for its diverse nature, which is made up of rough volcanic mountain surfaces, wetlands, and alpine plants. There is a visitor center and nature trails, so you can easily experience the great outdoors of the high mountains. There is also a public observatory at the highest point in Japan, where you can enjoy a star-filled sky at night.
Azuma Kofuji is an active volcano at an altitude of 1,707m and is one of the Azuma mountain range. When viewed from the Fukushima city area at the foot of the mountain, the large mortar-shaped crater looks like a miniature Mt. Fuji, which is why it got its name. It is easily accessible from Jododaira on the Bandai-Azuma Skyline, and after climbing a flight of stairs in about 10 minutes, you can see the crater with a diameter of about 500m. You can also enjoy a “circumnavigation of the crater crater wall” and enjoy the magnificent views of Takayama’s natural beauty and the Fukushima Basin.
