Kagawa Prefecture Tourism Information
The prefectural capital of Kagawa Prefecture is Takamatsu City. The population of the prefecture is one million. The northern province faces the Seto Inland Sea, and there are famous tourist destinations such as Yashima, Takamatsu Castle, Shodoshima, Ritsurin Park, Konpirasan, Zentsuji etc. Sanuki Udon is a typical specialty product of Kagawa, and the prefecture is said to be Kagawa Udon Ken (Kagawa Udon Prefecture) in a policy of tourism promotion. There are local cuisines such as Sanuki Udon (wheat noodle) and Anmochi Zouni (Bean Paste Rice Cake).
Konpirasan is especially famous, formally refers to the Kotohiragu shrine located in Zozusan in the town of Kotohira of Nakatado-gun. There are 1386 stone steps of visiting a shrine, and the views of the Seto Inland Sea View from the back of the shrine after climb all the steps are the best. It is one of the best attractions in the prefecture where 3 million tourists visit each year.
Also, Shodoshima in the Seto Inland Sea and Harimanada is famous tourist destination for olive and Kankakei. In particular, olive is a specilaty product of the island with a history of more than 100 years, which has been produced since 1908, and it boasts Japan’s largest production volume.
Kankakei (Kanka-kei Gorge) was selected as one of the three major valleys in Japan, and the valley of ancient volcanic activity and erosion activity has become a scenic spot that Shodoshima is proud of. The view from a ropeway leading to the summit at the time of autumnal leaves is the best.
Yashima, which is the plateau shaped like a roof in the city of Takamatsu, is also famous as a place of Genpei battle. You can overlook the Seto Inland Sea and Takamatsu city from the observatory Shishi no Reigan (the spirit rock of lion) at the top of Yashima, which is a tourist attraction in Kagawa Prefecture.
Tamamo Park is located in the city of Takamatsu and it is the park that is made by the development of of the Takamatsu Castle Ruins land, and there is no tower, but “Tukimi-rou (the tower of viewing the moon)” and “Watari-rou” are designated as important cultural properties. The park is also known as cherry blossoms and “Sakura no Baba (the place of horse riding surrounded by cherry blossoms)” in the park is crowded with tourists in a cherry-blossom viewing season.
Takamatsu Castle was completed in 1590 and was used as a residence of Mr. Ikoma and Mr. Matsudaira over the nearly 300 years, but was abandoned because of aging after the Meiji Restoration in 1884. Restoration project has been carried out now, and there are “Tukimi-rou” and “Watari-rou” and other culturral assets, which are open to the public. Sea water has been drawn in the moat of Castle Park, and you can also do feed the fish.
Ritsurin Park is a Japanese garden located in the city of Takamatsu, which boasts extensive grounds of 75ha. It also has been designated as a national special scenic spot. It was built over 100 years since the days of the years of Sanuki’s load Ikoma. There were an art museum and a folk crafts museum in the park, and the zoo was open until 2002. It was selected to three star in 2006 in the tourist guide of Michelin, “Green Guide Japon,” and it is an internationally acclaimed park.
