Sasayama Castle was built in 1609 (Keicho 14) by the daimyo of the Saigoku region in six months under the order of Tokugawa Ieyasu to suppress the Toyotomi forces. Hirayama Castle was built in the Sasayama Basin, and is currently maintained as Sasayama Castle Park.
Approximately 1,000 Yoshino cherry trees are planted around the moat of the Sasayama Castle ruins and in the castle town, and will be illuminated with paper lanterns during the festival. The best time to see them is usually from early to mid-April.
