This live camera shows Kinkaku-ji Temple, officially known as Rokuon-ji, in Kinkakujicho, Kita Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. You can see the current view of the golden Shariden hall and Kyoko-chi Pond, where the temple is reflected on the water. The camera is provided by the Rinzai Sect Shokokuji School and updates still images every three minutes. Streaming hours are from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Kinkaku-ji was built in 1397 by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the third shogun of the Muromachi shogunate. The Kinkaku-ji live camera is installed with a frontal composition from the pond area, showing the Shariden hall, also called the Golden Pavilion, and Kyoko-chi Pond. The footage lets you check the following highlights in real time.
Shariden (Kinkaku): This three-story building has gold leaf on the exterior walls and interior of the second and third floors. The way it shines changes depending on the angle of the light and the weather, and it has a distinctive presence even on cloudy days.
Kyoko-chi Pond: This large pond spreads out in front of the Shariden hall. The reflection of the Golden Pavilion on the water, often called the “upside-down Kinkaku,” is one of the most popular photo points. The pond includes small islands such as Ashihara-jima, Tsuru-jima, and Kame-jima, creating a graceful scene together with seasonal plants.
Rikushu-no-matsu Pine: This five-needle pine, said to have been cherished by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, is more than 600 years old. Its distinctive shape resembles a boat sailing with its sail raised, and it may be visible depending on the camera angle.
The atmosphere of the view changes greatly depending on the weather and time of day. The period just after the gates open in the morning, around 9:00 a.m., is especially calm, allowing visitors to enjoy Kinkaku-ji in clear air with fewer people.
Seasonal Highlights of Kinkaku-ji: Cherry Blossoms, Autumn Leaves, and Snow
Kinkaku-ji welcomes many visitors throughout the year, but its appearance changes completely with each season. Use the live camera to help choose the best timing for your visit.
Spring, from late March to early April: When the Somei Yoshino and weeping cherry trees on the temple grounds bloom, the contrast between the Golden Pavilion, the blossoms, and their reflection in Kyoko-chi Pond is exceptional. The cherry blossom season is especially crowded, so checking the morning conditions on the live camera in advance is recommended.
Summer, from June to August: The Golden Pavilion surrounded by fresh green leaves creates a beautiful contrast between vivid greenery and gold. Special nighttime viewing may also be held in some years.
Autumn, from early November to early December: The temple grounds usually reach their autumn color peak around mid-November. Kinkaku-ji surrounded by red and yellow leaves is one of its most popular views, alongside the snowy winter scenery.
Winter, from December to February: Snow accumulates in Kyoto City only a few days each year, but the Golden Pavilion covered in white snow is exceptionally beautiful. It is often said that Kyoto residents hurry to Kinkaku-ji when snow falls. With the live camera, you can check snow conditions in real time from early morning and avoid missing the rare snowy view. The period with the highest chance of snow in Kyoto’s Kita Ward is from early January to mid-February.

Access by public transportation: Get off at the Kyoto City Bus “Kinkakuji-michi” stop and walk about one minute. From JR Kyoto Station, take Kyoto City Bus route 101 or 205 for about 40 minutes. From Hankyu Saiin Station or Omiya Station, the bus ride takes about 30 minutes.
Access by car: It takes about 30 to 40 minutes from the Kyoto-minami IC or Kyoto-higashi IC on the Meishin Expressway. A dedicated paid parking lot is available on the temple grounds, but capacity is limited. Public transportation is recommended during sightseeing seasons and on snowy days because nearby roads can become crowded.
Nearby famous temples and shrines include Ryoan-ji, Ninna-ji, and Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, and they can be visited along the sightseeing route known as Kinukake-no-michi. If you plan to stay overnight, early reservations for hotels and ryokan in Kyoto City are recommended.
