Saitama Prifecture Tourism Information
Saitama Prefecture is located in the north of Tokyo in the Kanto region and is in contact with Tokyo and the six prefectures, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma, Chiba, Yamanashi Prefecture and Nagano Prefecture. The area of the prefectural land is about 103km from east to west, about 52km from north to south, and the area of the prefectural land is 3,798 square km. The prefecture population is about 7.2 million people, and the population of Saitama City, the prefectural capital of the ordinance-designated city, is about 1.23 million people. Saitama Prefecture is divided into the five provinces, Eastern, Central, Northern, Western and Chichibu, and as administrative districts it is made up of Kitaadachi County, Iruma County, Hiki County, Chichibu County, Kodama County, Dali County, Kitasaitama County, Minamisaitama County and Kitakatsushika County, which are 40 cities 22 towns and 1 village. It is an inland prefecture, which is surrounded by land, and the difference between heat and cold is intense and it is inland climate. It is characterized by hot summer and cold winter and Kumagaya and Koshigaya are known as the areas of intense heat. Especially, Kumagai is famous as the hottest town in Japan that was recorded 40.9 ℃, which became the highest temperature in Japan. The gross prefectural production of Saitama is the fifth place, which is next to Tokyo, Osaka, Aichi and Kanagawa.
Chichibu region of the western part and Kawagoe are famous as tourist destinations. In every spring in Hitsujiyama park of Chichibu City the 1,000 cherry trees in the park and 400,000 shares of ground pinks at the hills of phlox are in full bloom. In addition, Kawagoe City with a population of about 350,000 people is the historical city where the streets of the warehouse building as a castle town remain even now and is also known as “Little Edo”.
There are other tourism destinations such as Omiya Park of Saitama City with 1,200 cherry trees, JR East Japan Railway Museum, the world’s first public Omiya Bonsai Art Museum, and Hikawa Shrine that was founded more than two thousand years ago.
The local cuisine are “Hiya-jiru Udon“, Udon with a cold soup, “Igamanju“, the bun of bean paste wrapped in red rice, “yakitori (Yakiton)“, which is made with cheek meat of pork, not the chicken.
