The Kurushima Strait is a strait about 5 km wide between Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture and Oshima Island, and is one of the three major rapids in Japan. It is known as a difficult place to navigate because of its fast currents, which can reach a maximum speed of 10 knots per hour. It is a busy strait with about 1,200 ships passing through it every day. The Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge is a 4,105 m long road bridge that spans this strait and is made up of three suspension bridges. It is part of the Nishi-Seto Expressway “Shimanami Kaido” and has a roadway, bicycle path, and walkway. It opened in 1999 and has become an important transportation route connecting Honshu and Shikoku.
