This is a live camera installed at the Shomyo Waterfall observation deck in Ashikuraji, Tateyama Town, Nakaniikawa District, Toyama Prefecture. Shomyo Waterfall is Japan’s tallest waterfall, a four-tier waterfall with a total drop of 350 meters, fed by the Tateyama mountain range. It is designated as a national Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. During the spring snowmelt season, the water volume increases and the waterfall becomes especially powerful. Together with the adjacent Hannoki Falls, the total drop can exceed 500 meters. Basic Information and Highlights of Shomyo Waterfall

Shomyo Waterfall is located in Ashikuraji, Tateyama Town, Nakaniikawa District, Toyama Prefecture, and is Japan’s tallest waterfall with a drop of 350 meters. The Shomyo River, fed by the Tateyama mountain range, plunges down a terrace in four stages. The waterfall is designated as a national Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument.

The greatest highlight is the period from spring to early summer, when snowmelt adds to the water volume. All four tiers become active, and the roar of the waterfall sends white spray as far as the observation deck. During high-water periods, Hannoki Falls, located to the right of Shomyo Waterfall, also appears with a drop of more than 500 meters, creating a spectacular view of two waterfalls side by side. Autumn foliage is usually at its best from early to late October, when the contrast between the colored valley trees and the white falling water is especially beautiful.

Shomyo Road, which leads to Shomyo Waterfall, is usually open from around late April to late November and is closed during winter.

Access to Shomyo Waterfall and Parking

To reach Shomyo Waterfall, it takes about 20 minutes by car from Tateyama Station on the Toyama Chiho Railway to the Shomyo Waterfall parking lot. Shuttle buses also operate from Tateyama Station during some periods, though service varies by season. Many visitors arrive by car.

The Shomyo Waterfall parking lot is free to use. From the parking lot, it takes about 30 minutes on foot along a walking path, about 1.4 kilometers, to reach the observation deck. During the spring-to-autumn access period, the Shomyo Road gate is generally open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., though hours may vary by season and day of the week. The road may close during severe weather or poor road conditions, so check the live camera and weather forecast before visiting.

There are shops and restrooms near the Shomyo Waterfall observation deck, and you can feel the power of the waterfall from the walking path as well.

How to Enjoy Shomyo Waterfall Live Camera Views by Season

The Shomyo Waterfall live camera shows completely different scenery depending on the season.

Spring, from April to June: Snowmelt brings the highest water volume of the year, and you can see the full power of the 350-meter waterfall. Around late April to May, when Shomyo Road opens, the water volume is especially high and the powerful images are popular.

Summer, from July to September: The water volume becomes somewhat calmer, but the white stream of the waterfall stands out beautifully against the green valley, creating a refreshing view.

Autumn, from October to early November: This is the autumn foliage season, when the surrounding deciduous trees turn red and yellow. The contrast between the waterfall and the colored leaves creates especially beautiful live camera footage. The best viewing period is usually from early to late October.

Winter, from December to early April: Shomyo Road is closed and visitors cannot access the site, but the live camera can still show the severe winter scenery of Shomyo Waterfall and the Shomyo River covered in snow.
