Ginkaku-ji Temple is officially called Jisho-ji Temple, and like Kinkaku-ji Temple, it is a Rinzai sect Shokokuji school subtemple. A subtemple is a small temple or branch temple within the grounds of a large temple, but in the case of Ginkaku-ji Temple and Kinkaku-ji Temple, it is a temple outside the grounds or precincts.
Ginshadan is a unique garden element in the grounds of Ginkaku-ji Temple. It is located in front of the main hall (hojo) and is a flat, wavy sand mound about 65-66 cm high made from Shirakawa sand. Its shape is said to represent ripples or the ocean (nada), and its role is said to have been to reflect moonlight to illuminate the main hall.
Believed to have been built after the Edo period, Ginsandan is said to have been modeled after China’s West Lake, and is thought to be related to moon-gazing.
At the back of Ginsandan is a 180cm-tall conical mound of sand called “Kogetsudai,” and together these form the unique landscape of Ginkakuji Temple.
